CBD EFFECT ON RHEUMATISM
In the case of rheumatism, CBD products may be a viable alternative treatment option. Cannabidiol (CBD), the main cannabinoid of Cannabis Sativa, is often studied for its potential analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Research published this year suggests that CBD may also be a viable alternative for the treatment of rheumatism. This aspect of the research needs to be confirmed as the results obtained so far are mainly based on pre-clinical studies.
Preventive treatment of osteoarthritis with CBD
The results of the studies published so far are very promising. A study published in 2017 used CBD in the context of its potential use in patients with osteoarthritis. Studies in rats showed that prophylactic treatment with CBD prevented further OA joint pain and nerve damage. In addition, CBD also showed significant improvement when administered topically in acute arthritis. These results suggest that CBD may be a safe and useful therapeutic tool for the treatment of neuropathic joint pain associated with OA. Similar beneficial effects were observed in other studies in dogs in 2018.
More research work
The positive results of pre-clinical studies have led researchers to evaluate the efficacy of CBD in humans with OA. One such study showed a beneficial effect when 250 mg of CBD was administered daily for 12 weeks. Interestingly, the results were much better in men. The results of these studies are promising, and further studies in a larger group of patients are needed to confirm and refine the recommendations for the use of CBD in rheumatological diseases.
CBD products
CBD products may be a promising alternative in rheumatology, especially as they are available over-the-counter and marketed as dietary supplements or health products. The World Health Organisation recognizes that pure CBD is safe and poses no potential risk of abuse. Unfortunately, in the absence of a similar regulatory framework as for medicines, the quality of CBD products varies widely and often does not contain contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and micro-organisms. Therefore, it is very important to choose high-quality products that have been fully tested and are therefore safe for the consumer.
